Junior executive Peter Christopher is told by his boss Mr. Brahms that he will not receive a
promotion unless he is married. Since Mr. Brahms sells baby food he feels his executives
should be married. Peter relates his problem to his friend Greta, a hat check girl at a local bar.
She tells him it's too bad he can't do what she does in the bar for protection - "pretend you're
married". This gives him an idea and he asks Greta to become his 'occasional wife' for
company functions. Greta agrees so Peter puts her on salary and sets her up in housekeeping
in the apartment two floors above his. Between his company functions and both of their
personal lives they find many reasons to be running up and down the fire escape to the
confusion and bemusement of the man-in-the-middle on the 8th floor.
